Marjane Satrapi’s blackly comic and autobiographical graphic novels describe the chaos and pleasure of life in contemporary Iran. Now living in Paris, Satrapi mixes humor with tragedy to create intense and personal stories set in the Middle East. Gloria Steinem noted that Satrapi “may well have created a genre of her own.”

In the international bestsellers Persepolis (2003) and Persepolis 2 (2004), Satrapi evoked, in image and language, the hardships of growing up during the 1970’s Islamic revolution. The Los Angeles Times praised Satrapi’s voice as “calling out to the rest of us, reminding us to embrace this child’s fervent desire that human dignity reign supreme.” Satrapi’s other works include Embroideries (2005), which portrayed the intimate lives of Iranian women and Chicken With Plums (2006), recounting the life of a favorite great-uncle. Underwritten by Union Bank of California.
