She attended college in New York City in the early 1990s, then spent several years working at odd jobs and traveling. As she wandered the U.S. and abroad, she set out to collect voices, stories and anecdotes from ordinary, everyday people. She was first published in 1993 by Esquire magazine and went on to publish Pilgrims (1997), a collection of short stories for which she received the Pushcart Prize. She is also the author of National Book Award finalist The Last American Man (2002) and the highly acclaimed memoir Eat, Pray, Love (2006). Anne Lamott has described Gilbert’s work as “wise, jaunty, human, ethereal, heartbreaking.” photo credit: Deborah Lopez Upcoming EventsISABEL ALLENDE: AN IN-DEPTH & ENTERTAINING EVENINGMay 11, 2010
