A native of New York City’s largest borough, Lethem’s Motherless Brooklyn (1999) won the National Book Critics Circle Award, while Bookforum placed Lethem “at his peak Nabokov-meets-Woody-Allen verbal frenzy.” His recent works include the short-story collection Men and Cartoons (2004) and The Disappointment Artist (2005), which brings together his essays on writing, music and culture. A recipient of a 2005 MacArthur “genius” grant, Lethem was a founding editor of the cutting-edge magazine Fence. His articles have appeared in Rolling Stone, The Believer and McSweeney’s.
