Poetry in Motion® in the news!
Portland-area businesses step in to save TriMet’s Poetry in Motion® program
By Anna Griffin, The Oregonian Somebody should write a poem about Professional Sign & Graphics, Lamar Advertising and Calsak Plastics, an ode to generosity and the good things that can happen when a bunch of businesses work together.
It needs to be small enough to fit inside a TriMet bus, though.
Last year, somebody at Lamar read a newspaper story about the sad state of the Poetry in Motion program, a project by TriMet and the nonprofit Literary Arts that put poems and excerpts on small advertising cards inside buses and trains. It’s a way to add a little joy to the daily commute, and bring an often-ignored form of literature to the mass-transit-riding masses. Since the first cards went up in 1997, Literary Arts has featured 140 poems. But Literary Arts hadn’t been able to afford new cards since 2007, and TriMet was slowly replacing the old cards with advertisements and public-service announcements. |
