POETRY IN MOTION®

What is Poetry in Motion®?

Poetry in Motion® is a program that was developed in 1992 by the Poetry Society of America and the MTA New York City Transit to make bus and subway riding a more pleasurable and enlightening experience. Inspired by a similar program in the London Underground, the program places poem-placards in the spaces usually reserved for advertisements in subway cars and buses. Since its founding, the program has expanded to 14 cities across the country, reaching 13 million people daily. Portland was the first West coast city to adopt the program—joining the ranks with New York, Chicago and Boston.

Who funds the program?

The Portland program is presented by Literary Arts in association with TriMet, Lamar Advertising and the Poetry Society of America.

Who chooses the poems?

A committee of Literary Arts, TriMet and Poetry Society of America representatives correspond periodically to agree upon poems for the series. Corresponding with National Poetry Month, Poetry In Motion® unveils new poetry cards every April for commuters to enjoy.

Can anyone submit poems for consideration?

Unfortunately, we cannot accept unsolicited poetry for the program.

Can teachers receive free posters for teaching purposes?

Yes, the Poetry Society of America offers complimentary Poetry in Motion® posters to educational facilities, hospitals and other nonprofit organizations. Requests should be made in writing on the organization’s letterhead and sent to the following address: Literary Arts Poetry in Motion® card request PO Box 40606 Portland, OR 97240

Poetry in Motion® brings poetry into the everyday lives of commuters by placing artfully designed poem cards on public buses and trains. New poems, many by Oregon poets, are selected each year in partnership with the Poetry Society of America, TriMet and Lamar Advertising, surrounding commuters with an ever-changing literary exhibit.
