Hunger Catherine McGuire

She pours birdseed
like powder from a keg,
and the birds explode behind her – quarreling, flashing feathers,
licking up the grain like a
flame eats fuel.
Pigeons are voracious – pushing,
demanding the first place;
a gray rope of hunger
strung out on a line of corn.
