WITS 2014-15 Snapshot

We’ve had a busy year with our youth programs at Literary Arts!

3,600+ students served

1,049 participated in semester-long residencies
312 attended WITS student readings
9 were mentored individually and in small groups by writers
639 participated in author visits to schools
180 attended the MothSHOP event at Grant High School
8 performed in the MothSHOP at Grant High School
1,000 attended an author event at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall
112 were mentored by community members at college essay writing tutorials held at Benson, Franklin, Madison, and Roosevelt High Schools
19 participated in the Verselandia! poetry slam
300 attended Verselandia!
35 attended slam poetry classes at Literary Arts

We want to extend a huge thanks to our community for supporting our work with these students:

WITS Residencies: 35 teachers at 11 public high schools hosted 24 local writers who shared their expertise with 42 classes throughout a semester-long residency

11 school librarians held poetry slams at their schools to prepare for Verselandia

89 volunteer mentors helped students generate ideas and revise drafts of their college and scholarship application essays

4 local publications honored students published in the WITS anthology with prizes for prose and poetry

dozens of teachers and volunteers went above and beyond to prepare and chaperone students attending evening author events at the Schnitz

11 community partners hosted 15 student readings, with a total audience of 794 parents, teachers, friends, and other community members.
