Anthology

Since 1999, Literary Arts has published an annual anthology of selected poems and prose from Writers in the Schools (WITS) students. Always provocative, always endearing, the WITS anthology gives a wide array of students the opportunity to showcase some of the best creative writing in Portland.

“Writing is like building a house; it might take a while to get right, but in the end it’s worth it.”
—Portland public high school student

The Writers in the Schools (WITS) program serves all of the Portland public high schools with semester-long writing residencies taught by local professional authors. WITS also provides students with mentoring, publishing opportunities and visits with touring authors.

WITS residencies culminate in student readings at galleries, cafés and libraries throughout the city. Students from Marshall, Roosevelt, Lincoln, Jefferson and Franklin high schools will share their poems, prose and comic arts. Students will be joined by Oregon writers Natalie Serber, Cindy Williams Gutierrez, Carmen Bernier-Grand, Emma Oliver, Chris Cottrell, Laura Moulton, John Isaacson, Renee Mitchell, Nicole Georges, Alexis Nelson and Hunt Holman.
